Das wohl charakteristischste Merkmal der Beuteltiere sind ihre deutlich längeren Hinterbeine, auf denen sie sich springend fortbewegen können. So können sie auf kurzer Distanz Geschwindigkeiten von bis zu 50 km/h erreichen. Ihr Vorkommen beschränkt sich auf Australien, Neuguinea und Tasmanien. Bei der Wahl ihrer Lebensräume sind die Pflanzenfresser jedoch relativ anpassungsfähig, sie bewohnen tropische Regenwälder genauso wie Busch- und Graslandschaften oder trockene Steppen- und Wüstenregionen.
